The Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve in central Kazakhstan is one of the most significant wetland systems in the world and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Saryarka.' It encompasses a vast network of freshwater and saltwater lakes, including Lake Tengiz, which is larger than Lake Constance. The reserve is globally famous for hosting the northernmost breeding colony of Greater Flamingos, which can be seen here in tens of thousands during the summer months. The pristine steppe and lake landscape serves as a vital resting stop for millions of migratory birds on their journeys between Africa, India, and Siberia. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, including rare specimens such as the Dalmatian pelican and the white-tailed eagle. The region plays a crucial role in global avian conservation and has researchers and birdwatchers a unique opportunity to witness rare species in their natural habitat.
