💡 Tips
- The climate is extreme continental; expect bitterly cold winters and scorching hot summers, so pack accordingly.
- The city was built around copper mining; learning a few words of Russian or Kazakh will go a long way as English is rarely spoken.
- Public transport is available via buses and marshrutkas, but Yandex Go or local taxis are inexpensive and much easier to navigate.
- Distances in the Kazakh steppe are vast; if traveling outside the city, ensure you have plenty of water, fuel, and a reliable vehicle.
- Be prepared for occasional dust from the surrounding steppe and mining operations; sunglasses and a scarf are handy.

Jezkazgan is a significant mining city in central Kazakhstan, serving as the administrative center of the newly re-established Ulytau Region. The city's history is inextricably linked to the discovery and extraction of massive copper deposits, which began on an industrial scale in the 1930s under Soviet direction. The settlement was officially granted city status in 1954, having rapidly developed into a major industrial hub for the region. Jezkazgan holds a unique position in space history: due to its proximity to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, it is frequently the first destination for astronauts and cosmonauts after they land in the surrounding steppe following their orbital missions. The urban landscape is characterized by functional industrial architecture, complemented by monuments dedicated to the scientists and geologists who explored the area. Geographically, Jezkazgan is located on the edge of the Betpak-Dala steppe, resulting in a harsh continental climate with scorching summers and freezing winters.
