CIPREL Power Plant (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The CIPREL power plant (Compagnie Ivoirienne de Production d'Électricité) in the Vridi industrial zone of Abidjan is a central pillar of Ivory Coast's energy supply. Commissioned in 1994, it was one of the first independent power plant projects in Africa. CIPREL uses offshore natural gas from Ivorian fields to generate electricity highly efficiently using gas turbines. Over recent decades, the facility has been expanded multiple times and converted to combined cycle technology (gas and steam), which significantly increased efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions per kilowatt-hour generated. With an installed capacity of over 550 MW, CIPREL covers a significant part of the national electricity demand and enables Ivory Coast to export electricity to neighboring countries. The facility is considered a flagship project for successful cooperation between the state and private investors in the energy sector.
