Velletri is a historic city situated on the southern slopes of the Alban Hills, representing the largest and oldest of the Castelli Romani towns. In antiquity, it was known as Velitrae, a powerful Volscian city that challenged Rome for centuries before being integrated into the Roman Republic. It is famously associated with the Octavia family, the lineage of Emperor Augustus, who reportedly spent much of his childhood in the city's lush surroundings. The Cathedral of San Clemente, built over the foundations of an ancient Roman building, houses the renowned Golden Cross of Velletri, an 11th-century masterpiece of medieval goldsmithing. Velletri is deeply rooted in agriculture, particularly famous for its vineyards and the production of Velletri DOC wines. The Oreste Nardini Civic Archaeological Museum showcases significant finds, most notably the Sarcophagus of Velletri, a 2nd-century AD artwork with intricate carvings of the Labors of Hercules. Despite suffering severe damage during World War II, the city has preserved much of its historical character in its winding medieval streets. Its elevated position provides sweeping views across the Pontine Plain all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today, Velletri serves as a bustling cultural and administrative center with a rich calendar of traditional festivals.
