Stelvio National Park (Italy)

Weather…

Established in 1935, Stelvio National Park covers approximately 130,700 hectares, making it one of the largest protected areas in the Alps. Spanning across the Lombardy and Trentino-South Tyrol regions, it encompasses the entire Ortler-Cevedale mountain massif. The landscape is characterized by extreme topographic variations, ranging from 600 meters in the valley floors to the summit of the Ortler at 3,905 meters. Geologically, the park is dominated by crystalline basement rocks and metamorphic formations shaped by alpine tectonic processes. A world-famous feature of the park is the Stelvio Pass road, renowned for its 48 hairpin turns on the northern ramp, making it one of the highest and most challenging mountain passes in Europe. The park is a sanctuary for diverse alpine fauna, including golden eagles, bearded vultures, red deer, and chamois, and preserves critical glacial ecosystems. Historically, the area was a frontline during World War I, and remains of high-altitude military outposts and trenches are still preserved on the mountain peaks.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is accessible via various alpine valleys in Lombardy and South Tyrol, with the Stelvio Pass being one of the most famous entry points. By car, well-maintained but extremely winding mountain pass roads lead up from Bormio or Prato into the protected area.
📅
Best season
The peak season for hikers and mountaineers is between July and September, when most high-altitude paths are free of snow and ice. The mountain pass roads are generally open from late May to October, while the rest of the year is dedicated to winter sports in the ski resorts.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is classic high-alpine, featuring steep slopes, glaciers, and rocky peaks such as the Ortler massif. Trails vary greatly from paved panoramic paths near the valleys to extremely demanding, high-altitude routes crossing permanent ice and snow.
🎒
What to bring
High-alpine equipment including crampon-compatible boots and warm clothing is absolutely necessary for excursions in the higher elevations. Even in summer, you should carry a hat, gloves, and sunscreen, as UV radiation and wind are very intense at this altitude.
🅿️
Parking
Large parking lots are located at cable car valley stations, directly at the summit of the Stelvio Pass, and in mountain villages like Sulden or Santa Caterina. At popular starting points, capacity can fill up quickly in summer, so an early arrival is highly recommended.
⚠️
Safety
High-mountain weather can change within minutes, which can be life-threatening, especially during glacier hikes. Absolute sure-footedness, a head for heights, and a good knowledge of alpine hazards are required for most paths above the tree line.
⏱️
Time needed
Short walks at the passes take 1-2 hours, while classic mountain tours often require 6-10 hours to complete. Many visitors stay for an entire week to explore different valleys of the massive park and experience the glacier landscapes at a more relaxed pace.
