Cuneo is located in southwestern Piedmont on a plateau at the confluence of the Stura and Gesso rivers. The city owes its name to its characteristic wedge shape (Italian 'cuneo'), formed by the erosion of the two rivers. Founded in 1198 as a free commune, its strategic position near the French border made it a vital fortress for centuries, surviving numerous sieges. The heart of the city is Piazza Galimberti, a vast square of nearly 24,000 square meters surrounded by neoclassical arcades and ranked among Italy's largest squares. Via Roma, the main street of the old town, is famous for its medieval arcades and elegant shops. Cuneo serves as the gateway to the Maritime Alps and the Mercantour National Park, making it a popular starting point for mountaineers and hikers. Economically, the region is noted for its agriculture, particularly hazelnuts, chestnuts, and beef. Civic life is characterized by a quiet elegance and a strong connection to alpine traditions.
