Monte Cassino Abbey
The Abbey of Montecassino is one of the most famous and influential monasteries in the Christian world, situated on a prominent hill in the Lazio region of Italy. It was founded in 529 by Saint Benedict of Nursia, who established the Benedictine Rule here, which became the standard for Western monasticism for centuries. Throughout its long history, the abbey has been destroyed four separate times: by the Lombards in 577, the Saracens in 883, a massive earthquake in 1349, and most famously during World War II. In February 1944, allied bombing completely leveled the abbey during the Battle of Monte Cassino, as it was mistakenly believed to be a German observation point. After the war, the Italian government rebuilt the monastery exactly as it was, using original 17th-century designs, a task that was completed in the 1950s. Today, the abbey serves as a working monastery, a museum, and a repository for some of the world's most valuable medieval manuscripts and archives. The main basilica is ornately decorated with marble and mosaics and contains the tomb of Saint Benedict and his sister, Saint Scholastica.
