Carrickfergus Castle
Carrickfergus Castle, situated on the shores of Belfast Lough in County Antrim, is one of Ireland's best-preserved Norman fortresses. Built by John de Courcy starting in 1177 shortly after his conquest of eastern Ulster, it served continuously as a strategic military base for over 800 years. The castle is distinguished by its massive keep and imposing curtain walls, which were adapted over the centuries to meet evolving defensive technologies. It survived sieges by King John in 1210, the Scottish commander Edward Bruce in 1315, and French forces in the 18th century. Notably, William of Orange landed here in 1690 prior to the Battle of the Boyne. Maintained as a military garrison until 1928, the fortress now houses a museum documenting the region's complex history and the development of siegecraft. Its solid construction directly upon a volcanic rock makes it a landmark of the Northern Irish coastline.
