Drogheda is one of Ireland's oldest and most historically significant towns, situated on the River Boyne in County Louth, approximately 50 kilometers north of Dublin. The town was formally established in 1194 by a charter from Hugh de Lacy, though its origins as a settlement date back much further. During the Middle Ages, Drogheda was a major walled fortress and a key administrative hub, frequently hosting the Irish Parliament. An iconic survivor of this period is St. Laurence's Gate, a magnificent 13th-century barbican gate. The town is also remembered for the brutal Siege of Drogheda in 1649 by Oliver Cromwell’s forces, which resulted in significant casualties among the garrison and citizenry. Another notable landmark is St. Peter's Church, which houses the relic of the head of Saint Oliver Plunkett. Today, Drogheda is a thriving industrial and commercial center in the northeast, balancing its deep heritage with modern growth. Its proximity to the site of the 1690 Battle of the Boyne reinforces its central place in Irish historical narratives.
