Muara Takus Temples (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Muara Takus temple complex is the only surviving Buddhist site in Riau province, Sumatra, offering a rare glimpse into the island's pre-Islamic heritage. Attributed to the 11th or 12th century, the complex is historically associated with the Srivijaya Empire, a maritime power that dominated Southeast Asian trade. The site features several stupas constructed primarily of red brick and sandstone, distinguished by their unique proportions compared to Javanese counterparts. Its centerpiece is Candi Mahligai, a slender, tower-like stupa reaching over 14 meters in height. Enclosed by a square perimeter wall, the complex is situated on the banks of the Kampar Kanan River, highlighting its former status as a strategic religious center on a key riverine trade route. Muara Takus serves as an essential record of Buddhist expansion in Sumatra and reflects the diverse architectural traditions across the Indonesian archipelago.
