Lake Sentarum National Park is located in the heart of Borneo within the West Kalimantan province. Established as a national park in 1999, it encompasses a vast system of seasonal lakes and floodplains covering roughly 1,320 square kilometers. The area is ecologically distinctive because its water levels fluctuate dramatically; the lakes fill from the Kapuas River during the rainy season and can dry out almost completely during the dry season. It was designated a Ramsar site of international importance in 1994 due to its role as a critical habitat for freshwater fish and migratory birds. The vegetation consists of peat swamp forests and stunted swamp forests adapted to these extreme water cycles. The park is home to traditional fishing communities and provides a crucial sanctuary for endangered species such as orangutans and proboscis monkeys.

Getting there

Typically reached by taking a longboat or speedboat up the Kapuas River from nearby regional towns, as the flooded forests make conventional road travel nearly impossible during wet months.

Visiting during the dry season is usually preferred for observing fishing activities, while the wet season features a vastly different landscape when the lakes merge into a massive wetland.

The landscape is highly dynamic, transitioning between interconnected seasonal lakes, dense swamp forests, and exposed peatlands depending entirely on the current water levels.

It is highly recommended to bring robust mosquito repellent, lightweight and breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection, and a reliable waterproof dry bag for your electronics.

Parking

Vehicles must generally be left at the designated starting towns along the riverbanks, as onward transportation into the heart of the national park is exclusively conducted by watercraft.

Safety

Be well-prepared for significant mosquito populations in the swamp areas, hire an experienced local boat guide for navigation, and avoid leaning out of small boats in crocodile habitats.

A comprehensive visit to truly explore the vast lake system and observe the unique local wildlife generally requires at least two to three days, often involving homestays in floating villages.
