Hrafnseyri in Arnarfjörður, in the Westfjords, is one of Iceland's most significant national memorial sites. It is the birthplace of Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879), the leader of the Icelandic independence movement, whose birthday on June 17th is now Iceland's National Day. The location has a rich history dating back to the Viking Age and is named after Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, one of the island's first explorers. Visitors can find a museum dedicated to the life and work of Jón Sigurðsson here, as well as a characterful turf church and a reconstructed turf house. The remote location between high mountains and the deep blue fjord conveys a sense of the harsh living conditions of the past and the determination of Icelandic patriots.
