Nyírbátor Reformed Church (Hungary)

Weather…

The Reformed Church of Nyírbátor is one of the most magnificent examples of Late Gothic architecture in Hungary, recognized for its exceptional artistic value. It was commissioned by Stephen Báthory, Voivode of Transylvania, between 1480 and 1511, following his vow after the victory over the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Breadfield. The building is a single-naved hall church, distinguished by its panoramic net vaulting that spans the entire interior without supporting columns. Adjacent to the church stands a massive wooden bell tower built around 1640, which is the largest and oldest of its kind in Hungary, showcasing exquisite Transylvanian Renaissance carpentry. Inside, the red marble tomb of Stephen Báthory remains a highlight of 16th-century Renaissance sculpture. The church once housed the famous carved stalls of 1511, now preserved in the Hungarian National Museum. This monument stands as a testament to the cultural prominence of the Báthory family and the architectural heights reached in late medieval Hungary.
