Pok Fu Lam Village is a living relic of Hong Kong’s pre-colonial past, nestled on the western slopes of Hong Kong Island. Established during the early Qing Dynasty, it has survived the city’s rapid urbanization, maintaining a unique layout of narrow, winding alleys and traditional dwellings. The village is famously recognized by the World Monuments Watch for its cultural significance and the community's resilience in preserving their heritage. One of the most vibrant traditions here is the Fire Dragon Dance, performed annually during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Unlike the more famous Tai Hang version, the Pok Fu Lam dragon is made of straw and incense, carried through the village's labyrinthine paths to bring blessings. The settlement is divided into several sections, such as the "Dragon's Head" and "Dragon's Tail," reflecting its organic growth over centuries. Visiting the village offers a stark contrast to the nearby high-rise apartments, providing a rare glimpse into the rural communal life that once defined the entire region.
