Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve
Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve, situated at the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island, is a site of paramount ecological and geological importance. Established in 1996, it is Hong Kong's only marine reserve, specifically designated for scientific research and the protection of marine life. The area is home to the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS), and as such, recreational activities like swimming, diving, and fishing are strictly prohibited to minimize human impact. Visitors are drawn to the reserve's dramatic rocky coastline, featuring iconic landmarks like 'Bones', the reconstructed skeleton of a fin whale, and natural sea caves such as Thunder Cave and Crab Cave. The reserve also encompasses the Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Hong Kong, which has guided ships since 1875. This protected area has a rare opportunity to witness untouched coastal biodiversity and serves as a critical laboratory for understanding and preserving the marine environment in the South China Sea.
