Veria is a historically rich city in Central Macedonia, Greece, situated at the eastern foot of the Vermio Mountains. The city features a continuous history of over 2,500 years and was one of the most prominent cities in the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia. A key historical site is the 'Bema of Saint Paul,' where the Apostle is said to have preached to the citizens in the 1st century AD. Veria is celebrated for its immense Byzantine heritage and is often called 'Little Jerusalem' because it once housed more than 70 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, many of which are preserved today. The traditional districts of Kyriotissa and the Jewish quarter of Barbouta showcase distinctive architecture reflecting the city's Ottoman and Jewish past. In modern times, Veria has evolved into a major agricultural hub, particularly renowned for its high-quality peach production exported worldwide. Its close proximity to the archaeological site of Vergina, the first capital of the ancient Macedonians, makes it a vital cultural gateway in the region.
