Mystras (Greece)

Weather…

Mystras is an abandoned Byzantine fortified city located on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, near ancient Sparta. It was founded in 1249 by William II of Villehardouin as a Frankish fortress, but it soon became the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Mystras flourished as a prominent center of art, philosophy, and learning, hosting scholars such as the Neoplatonist Plethon. The city's layout features a palace of the Despots, formidable defensive walls, and numerous churches adorned with exceptionally preserved frescoes. The Pantanassa Monastery is particularly noteworthy, as it remains the only inhabited building in the complex and represents a masterpiece of late Byzantine architecture. After the city fell to the Ottomans in 1460 and later saw Venetian rule, it gradually declined and was eventually abandoned in the 19th century in favor of modern Sparta. Since 1989, Mystras has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering visitors a profound look into the twilight of the Byzantine Empire.
