Lake Trichonida is the largest natural lake in Greece, located in the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, east of the city of Agrinio. Spanning approximately 96 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 58 meters, it serves as a crucial freshwater reservoir for the region. Geologically, the lake basin was formed by tectonic shifts millions of years ago. Its shores are characterized by lush vegetation and extensive reed beds, providing a habitat for over 200 species of birds. The surrounding agricultural lands, particularly olive and citrus groves, rely heavily on the lake's water resources for irrigation. Despite its scale, the lake remains relatively undisturbed by large-scale tourism, preserving its natural integrity. It is also home to unique endemic fish species, such as the Trichonida goby, which is found exclusively within this specific aquatic ecosystem.

Greece's largest natural lake is located not far from the city of Agrinio and can be easily circumnavigated via well-maintained, flat roads. The surrounding infrastructure is solid, making arrival with your own car particularly relaxed and simple.

Thanks to the relatively mild climate in this region, a visit is generally worthwhile throughout the entire year. Spring and autumn, however, offer the most pleasant conditions for extended walks along the vast and peaceful shorelines.
