Fort Good Hope

Fort Good Hope, originally named 'Fort de Goede Hoop', is a Dutch fort situated on the coast in Senya Beraku. It was established in 1667 to promote the lucrative trade in gold, ivory, and slaves in the region. The fort was the last significant fortification built by the Dutch on the Gold Coast, marking the western limit of their immediate sphere of influence. The architecture of the fort is compact and functional, with reinforced walls and bastions designed to control both sea and land approaches. During the 18th century, it played a central role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade before being handed over to the British in 1868 as part of a territorial exchange. The site gives deep insights today into the economic interests and colonial rivalry between European powers in West Africa. Currently, Fort Good Hope serves as a museum and guest house, with its well-preserved structure making it a key point for cultural tourism in Ghana.
