Schweriner See (Germany)

Weather…

Schweriner See, with an area of about 61 square kilometers, is the fourth largest lake in Northern Germany and a defining feature of the state capital, Schwerin. It is a typical glacial lake, formed by meltwater at the end of the last ice age, and is currently divided into an Outer Lake and an Inner Lake by the Paulsdamm causeway. The undisputed landmark on its shores is the magnificent Schwerin Castle, situated on its own island in the Inner Lake, which is regarded as one of Europe's most significant examples of Romantic Historicism. The lake's history is closely tied to the House of Mecklenburg, whose dukes utilized it as a strategic stronghold and hunting ground. Beyond its cultural heritage, the lake is a vital nature conservation area, particularly Kaninchenwerder Island, known for its biodiversity and ancient beech forests. The water quality is exceptional, making it a popular spot for fishing, sailing, and swimming. Connected via the Stör waterway, the lake also plays an important role in regional water tourism leading towards the Elbe river.
