Demmin is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District at the confluence of the Peene, Trebel, and Tollense rivers, which has earned the region the nickname "Land of Three Rivers". The former Hanseatic city has a long trading history that is still evident today in the circular layout of the old town and the remains of the medieval city wall with the Luisentor gate. The silhouette of the town is defined by the massive Church of Saint Bartholomew, a neo-Gothic brick building designed by Friedrich August Stüler, whose tower rises to nearly 96 meters. In the Hanseatic quarter on Fisherman's Island, the Middle Ages come alive: visitors can observe traditional crafts in reconstructed half-timbered huts. The surrounding river landscape of the Peene Valley, often referred to as the "Amazon of the North", provides handy conditions for canoe trips through untouched peat bogs and dense reed belts, providing opportunities to spot beavers, otters, and white-tailed eagles.
