Tannenberg Memorial (Germany)

Weather…

The Tannenberg National Memorial was built between 1924 and 1927 near Hohenstein in East Prussia (now Olsztynek, Poland) to commemorate the German victory over Russian troops at the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914. The monument was designed as a monumental castle-like structure with eight prominent towers, intended to symbolize the connection to East Prussian soil. In 1934, the memorial was converted into the final resting place for Reich President Paul von Hindenburg and his wife, further increasing its significance as a National Socialist cult site. Near the end of World War II in January 1945, German troops blew up parts of the monument ahead of the advancing Red Army to prevent the desecration of the graves. Hindenburg's coffins had been evacuated earlier. In the post-war years, the monument was almost completely dismantled by the Polish side, and the stones were partially used for the construction of public buildings in Warsaw. Today, only sparse foundation remains serve as a reminder of the once-massive structure.
