The Havel is the longest right-bank tributary of the Elbe, measuring 334 kilometers in length and flowing mostly through Brandenburg and Berlin. It rises in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at Lake Born near Ankershagen and joins the Elbe at Havelberg in Saxony-Anhalt. The most distinctive feature of the Havel is its extremely low gradient of only about 40 meters over its entire length, resulting in a very slow flow velocity. This slow movement encourages the formation of numerous lake-like widenings, particularly in the Potsdam and Berlin areas, such as Lake Wannsee or Lake Templin. Historically, the river played a central role in the Prussian cultural landscape, which is reflected in the architecture of the palaces and gardens along its banks. The Havel is navigable over almost its entire length and forms a vital link in the waterway network between the Elbe and the Oder rivers.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access points are extremely plentiful along its vast network of interconnected lakes and waterways. Visitors can easily reach the banks via public transport in Berlin and Potsdam, or drive to numerous rural recreation areas in Brandenburg.
📅
Best season
Summer is peak season for sailing, swimming, and relaxing at the famous strandbads, though it can become quite crowded. Spring and early autumn are wonderful for quieter cycling and hiking tours along the extensive shoreline paths.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding landscape is generally very flat, featuring a mix of manicured urban parks, sandy lakeside beaches, and dense pine forests.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable footwear is recommended for exploring the long waterside trails, and bringing swimwear is essential during the warmer months. If cycling, a reliable bike map or GPS is useful to navigate the complex network of surrounding routes.
🅿️
Parking
Parking availability heavily depends on the specific location; urban areas offer paid parking garages and street zones.
⚠️
Safety
Water traffic can be remarkably dense with ferries, tourist boats, and private yachts, so swimmers must stay within marked safe bathing zones. Stay alert on shared paths where cyclists and pedestrians frequently cross ways in busy stretches.
⏱️
Time needed
Visits can range from a quick two-hour stroll along the urban promenades to multi-day sailing or cycling holidays spanning the entire region. The vast scale of the waterway system easily accommodates extended recreational itineraries.
