Martvili Canyon (Georgia)

Weather…

Martvili Canyon, located in the Samegrelo region, is a memorable natural wonder carved by the Abasha River over millennia. The canyon stretches for 2.4 kilometers, with depths ranging from 20 to 40 meters, and is famous for its emerald-green waters, steep limestone cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. Historically, this site was used as a summer residence and private swimming area by the Dadiani noble family, whose historical stone steps can still be seen carved into the rocks. In 2010, the canyon gained international scientific significance when fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles were discovered in its geological layers. Visitors can explore the upper section of the canyon by boat, paddling through narrow passages to see spectacular falls up close. The lower section features well-maintained walking paths and observation decks that provide panoramic views of the entire gorge and its lush, subtropical vegetation. The high humidity and shade have fostered a unique ecosystem of moss-covered trees and ferns, creating a mystical atmosphere. Following a major renovation in 2016, the site has become one of Western Georgia's premier eco-tourism destinations, balancing visitor access with the preservation of its unique geological and paleontological heritage.

🕒
Typical hours
The natural site typically welcomes visitors from morning until late afternoon, operating daily during the warmer tourist seasons. Hours are generally shorter during the winter months, and access may be restricted completely during heavy rainfall.

⏱️
Time needed
Walking the main paths and viewing the upper waterfalls generally takes about one to two hours at a relaxed pace. Including the optional boat ride along the lower river section will naturally extend your visit by another hour.
Combine with
A trip to the gorge is perfectly complemented by visiting the nearby historic Martvili Monastery, which sits prominently on a nearby hill. The magnificent Okatse Canyon is also situated within a reasonable driving distance for a full day of nature.
🧭
Getting there
The entrance is most conveniently reached by joining an organized tour or hiring a private driver from larger cities like Kutaisi. Navigating the rural roads by rental car is highly possible, with a designated parking lot available near the entrance.
💡
Insider tip
Waterproof shoes with good grip are highly recommended, as the stone pathways near the waterfalls frequently become slippery from the continuous mist. Try to arrive early in the morning to beat the large tour bus crowds during peak summer months.
