Tkibuli Coal Mine (Georgia)

Weather…

The Tkibuli coal mine, located in western Georgia's Imereti region, is a historically significant but currently struggling hard coal operation. Its reserves are part of the Tkibuli-Shaori coal basin, which extends over 400 km². The mine primarily produces thermal coal for electricity generation. Since the 1990s, output has declined due to obsolete Soviet-era machinery and underinvestment. The mine employs around 1,000 workers, with an annual payroll share of the local economy. The coal is transported via a 15 km railway spur to the Tkibuli thermal power plant, which has an installed capacity of 80 MW. Environmental concerns include acid mine drainage and spontaneous combustion of waste dumps. In 2019, the government attempted to attract foreign investors for rehabilitation but failed. The mine remains a symbol of Georgia's post-industrial decline.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
Situated in the Imereti region, Tkibuli remains the historic and contemporary heart of Georgian coal mining, focusing heavily on extracting hard coal to fulfill domestic industrial and energy requirements. The sprawling mining infrastructure defines the town's identity and serves as the primary economic engine for the local population despite challenging conditions.
🚪
Visiting
Due to stringent safety regulations and the inherently hazardous nature of active subterranean operations, tourist access into the working underground coal shafts is virtually impossible. Nevertheless, curious visitors can freely wander the surrounding town to view the prominent above-ground industrial architecture, the historic cable cars, and the monumental Soviet-era mining structures.
👀
Where to view it
The surrounding lush mountainsides of the Imereti region provide numerous elevated spots that offer a stark, dramatic perspective of the dark, industrial mining complexes set in the green valley below. Additionally, riding the remaining public cable cars provides a unique, moving aerial view over the operational surface facilities and the town's distinct topography.
🧺
Local products
In the heart of Tkibuli, the local markets cater primarily to the daily needs of the miners and their families, offering fresh regional produce, robust Imeretian cheeses, and freshly baked Georgian breads. Travelers exploring the local shops might also find rugged industrial gear, durable clothing, and perhaps some fascinating Soviet-era memorabilia in antique stores.
📆
Active season
The mining operations and the town's core rhythms are continuously active throughout the entire year, shifting only with the relentless schedule of the workers' shifts. However, visiting during the milder spring or crisp autumn months provides the most pleasant weather for long walks exploring the town's fascinating architectural decay and industrial heritage.
Nearby
Tkibuli is strategically located for an unforgettable road trip, easily combined with an exploration of the striking Shaori Reservoir just up the winding mountain pass, or a descent into the ancient regional capital of Kutaisi. The juxtaposition of the gritty mining town against Georgia's sweeping natural landscapes forms a deeply memorable travel itinerary.
