Sokhumi (Georgian Sukhumi, Abkhaz Aqwa), with around 65,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the breakaway region of Abkhazia on the eastern Black Sea coast, claimed by Georgia under international law but de facto independent. Its history is exceptionally deep: already in the 6th century BC Greek colonists from Miletus founded the trading post of Dioscurias here, followed by Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, Ottoman and Russian phases. In Soviet times Sokhumi was famed as a luxurious resort, with subtropical greenery, sanatoria, a primate research institute and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Russian Empire, founded in 1840. The 1992-1993 war between Georgian forces and Abkhaz fighters supported by Russia displaced much of the population and caused massive destruction; many hotels and villas still stand as ruins. The cityscape today is marked by restored colonial buildings along the seaside promenade, the gutted government house, a Stalinist neoclassical drama theatre, the walls of Bagrat's fortress and the cave systems of the surrounding hills, giving it a deeply ambivalent character.
