Lastoursville Caves (Gabon)

Weather…

The Lastoursville Caves, located in the Ogooué-Lolo basin, represent one of Gabon's most significant prehistoric and historical archives. The more than 35 mapped limestone caves have served as shelters for humans for millennia and house archaeological finds dating back to the Stone Age. During the colonial period, the site gained importance when French explorer François Rigail de Lastours established a post here called Madiville in 1883, which was later renamed after him. The caves played a central role in local beliefs and were often used for ritual purposes as well as burial sites. Geologically, they are characterized by impressive stalactites and stalagmites arranged in a complex network of passages. Today, the area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage candidate, offering a unique connection between natural history and human settlement over vast periods of time. The preservation of these underground worlds is of inestimable value for research into migration movements in Central Africa.
