Ndjolé is a strategically vital town in the Moyen-Ogooué Province of Gabon, often referred to as the gateway to the country's interior. Located on the right bank of the Ogooué River, it was founded in 1883 as a French military and commercial outpost to secure the exploration of the hinterland. A defining moment in the town's history was the construction of the Trans-Gabon Railway, with the first section reaching Ndjolé in 1979, elevating it to a central logistical hub. The town is also widely known as the primary access point for expeditions to Lopé National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its extraordinary biodiversity. Historically, the location is linked to the famous explorer Savorgnan de Brazza, who was temporarily buried here following his death in 1905. Today, the local economy relies on the transshipment of goods between river, rail, and road, as well as the thriving forestry industry in the surrounding region.
