Franceville Colonial Administration (Gabon)

Weather…

Franceville, originally named Masuku, was founded on June 13, 1880, by the famous Franco-Italian explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. The site was strategically chosen at the confluence of the Passa and Mpassa rivers to serve as a base for further exploration of the interior and as a settlement for former slaves. The town was named 'Franceville' as a symbol of freedom and French presence in the Haut-Ogooué region. During the colonial period, the town developed into a major administrative and logistical center, particularly following the discovery of rich ore deposits in the vicinity. Colonial-era architecture, such as old administrative buildings and residences, still characterizes the cityscape today and testifies to Franceville's importance as the gateway to eastern Gabon. Today, the city is not only the country's third-largest but also a center for scientific research and a vital transport hub via the Trans-Gabon Railway.
