Maeva Marae Complex

The Maeva Marae Complex on the island of Huahine stands as one of the most significant archaeological treasures in French Polynesia. Featuring over 30 individual marae, these stone ceremonial platforms were once the spiritual and political heart of the island’s royal lineages. Maeva is unique because it served as the communal seat for eight different noble families, a rarity in the typically centralized Polynesian power structures. The complex spans a beautiful stretch of land between the Fauna Nui Lake and the slopes of Mount Mouatapu. Beyond the sacred altars, researchers have uncovered the foundations of ancestral homes and ancient stone fish traps in the nearby lagoons, which are still visible today. The site provides an invaluable window into the pre-colonial social order and religious practices of the Maohi people, making it a cornerstone for Pacific archaeology.
