Le Mans, the capital of the Sarthe department in northwestern France, is globally renowned as the venue for the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, held since 1923 on the Circuit de la Sarthe. Beyond the racetrack, the city possesses a significant historical heritage, particularly the 'Cité Plantagenêt,' the medieval quarter featuring cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and the imposing Saint-Julien Cathedral. This cathedral, a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, is one of the largest in France and is famous for its stained-glass windows and exceptional flying buttresses. Also unique is the well-preserved Roman wall dating from the 3rd century, which, with its red bricks and geometric patterns, is among the best-preserved of its kind in Europe. The city was historically closely linked to the English Plantagenet dynasty, as Henry II of England was born here. Today, Le Mans combines its industrial tradition with a spirited cultural scene and modern urban development.
