Châteauroux is the capital of the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, situated along the banks of the Indre River. The town originated in the 10th century around the Château Raoul, which gave the settlement its name. During the Middle Ages, the nearby Abbey of Déols served as a major religious and cultural center, and its impressive ruins remain a significant historical site today. In the 19th century, the city experienced industrial growth driven by textile manufacturing and tobacco processing. Today, Châteauroux functions as an administrative hub and the main gateway to the Brenne Regional Natural Park, famous for its vast network of ponds and biodiversity. The town center features a mix of neoclassical architecture and medieval lanes, reflecting its long history as the seat of the Lords of Déols. Visitors can explore the Musée Bertrand, located in an 18th-century mansion, which houses notable Napoleonic memorabilia and fine arts collections. Châteauroux hosted the shooting events of the 2024 Olympics at the National Shooting Sports Centre, putting the town on the world Olympic map.
