Petäjävesi Old Church (Finland)

Weather…

Petäjävesi Old Church is an outstanding example of traditional Nordic wooden architecture and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was constructed between 1763 and 1765 under the leadership of master builder Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen using massive pine logs. The building uniquely combines Renaissance and Baroque elements with medieval Gothic traditions, showcasing the exceptional skills of local carpenters who worked without modern machinery. Particularly striking are the high, steep roof and the intricately crafted interior walls that reflect the spiritual and technical heritage of the region. In 1821, the builder's grandson, Erkki Leppänen, added the separate bell tower. The church remained virtually unchanged over the centuries because the local parish built a newer facility in the late 19th century, leaving the original structure largely untouched.
