Old Rauma (Finland)

Weather…

Old Rauma is the largest unified wooden town in the Nordic countries and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The area covers approximately 28 hectares and consists of around 600 buildings, most of which are still used as private residences or craft workshops. Rauma received its city rights in 1442, making it one of the oldest cities in Finland. A prominent landmark is the Church of the Holy Cross, dating back to the late 15th century, which originally served as part of a Franciscan monastery. The current architectural appearance is largely defined by the Neo-Renaissance style of the late 19th century, adopted during renovations following several major urban fires. The winding alleys and well-preserved wooden facades represent a significant monument to medieval town planning and traditional Nordic woodworking expertise.
