Kvarken Archipelago (Finland)

Weather…

The Kvarken Archipelago on Finland's west coast is a unique natural phenomenon and has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2006. Together with Sweden's High Coast, it forms an area where post-glacial land uplift is exceptionally visible. Due to the melting of the ice masses from the last Ice Age, the land here rises by about 8 to 8.5 millimeters annually, leading to the continuous emergence of new islands and the shallowing of bays. The archipelago consists of over 5600 islands, characterized by shallow waters and distinctive De Geer moraines. These wave-like geological formations were created beneath the continental ice sheet and are more prominent here than anywhere else in the world. The region provides a valuable habitat for numerous migratory birds and rare plant species. For visitors, the area is accessible via the Replot Bridge, the longest bridge in Finland, connecting the mainland with the outer islands. The Kvarken Archipelago serves as a living laboratory of geology, where the constant transformation of the Earth's surface can be observed within a human timescale.
