Tiglachin Monument (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Tiglachin Monument, frequently referred to as the Derg Monument, is a prominent landmark in Addis Ababa, inaugurated in 1984 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Ethiopian Revolution. The monument honors the Ethiopian and Cuban soldiers who fought during the Ogaden War from 1977 to 1978 against Somali forces. It features a central 50-meter-tall pillar topped with a sculpture of three armed figures, representing the revolutionary struggle. The construction was funded and executed by North Korea, which accounts for its distinct socialist realist architectural style. Large bronze reliefs on the sides depict various scenes from the revolution and the military campaigns of the era. Despite being a relic of the Marxist Derg regime, it remains an integral part of the city's historical landscape on Churchill Avenue. The site also serves as a symbol of the international socialist solidarity that defined Ethiopia's foreign policy during the late 20th century.
