Tallinn TV Tower
The Tallinn TV Tower in the Pirita district is Estonia's tallest structure, standing at a height of 314 meters and serving as a major cultural and tourist landmark. It was originally built to broadcast the sailing events of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, which were hosted in Tallinn. The tower earned a place in Estonian history in August 1991, when a small group of radio operators risked their lives to protect the broadcasting equipment from Soviet troops during the nation's push for restored independence. Following a major reconstruction, it reopened in 2012 as an interactive experience center. Its observation deck at 170 meters has wide-open 360-degree views, reaching as far as the coast of Finland on clear days. Thrill-seekers can participate in the 'Walk on the Edge' attraction, where visitors are tethered to the outside of the viewing platform. Inside, the tower features futuristic displays highlighting Estonian achievements in science and technology. As a symbol of freedom and technological progress, the tower remains an essential part of the capital's skyline.
