Massawa Salt Works (Eritrea)

Weather…

The Massawa Salt Works represent one of Eritrea oldest and most productive industrial assets. Spanning an area of approximately 1,000 hectares, the evaporation pans utilize intense sunlight and coastal winds to produce high-quality sea salt. Organized salt production began in the early 20th century during the Italian colonial period and was significantly expanded under the administration of the Societa per le Saline d'Eritrea. Today, the facility remains a major employer in the region, producing thousands of tons of salt annually for domestic consumption and export to neighboring African nations. The extraction process perfectly utilizes the natural conditions of the coast and is considered one of the most environmentally friendly forms of resource gathering. The brilliant white mounds of salt set against the backdrop of the azure Red Sea are also a striking visual landmark of the Massawa area.
