Esen Plateau (Eritrea)

Weather…

The Esen Plateau is a prominent geographical formation in the south-central highlands of Eritrea, forming part of the larger Ethiopian-Eritrean highland complex. Situated at an average elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, the plateau is characterized by a temperate climate and fertile volcanic soils. Geologically, the region is defined by massive Tertiary basalt that has been eroded into broad plains and deep valleys. Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, with traditional methods used to cultivate teff, sorghum, and millet. Due to its cooler temperatures and regular rainfall during the Kremti rainy season, the plateau has been densely populated for millennia. Historically, this area was a heartland of the Aksumite civilization, evidenced by numerous archaeological traces in the vicinity. The plateau's strategic location allowed for the control of trade routes between the coast and the interior.
