Alcedo Volcano is an impressive shield volcano located in the center of Isabela Island in the Galápagos. Reaching an elevation of 1,130 meters, it is most famous for its large population of Galápagos giant tortoises, which find good living conditions within the caldera-like depression. The volcano has a diameter of about 6 kilometers and a depth of 270 meters. Geologically, Alcedo is unique for its silica-rich rhyolitic lavas compared to its predominantly basaltic neighbors. The last documented eruption occurred in 1993, when lava issued from a vent on the southern flank. Moist trade winds sustain dense vegetation on the slopes that provides food for the tortoises, while the crater floor is characterized by active fumaroles.

Getting there
Access to this remote Galapagos volcano is strictly regulated and requires joining an official, certified multi-day boat tour. Visitors are dropped off by small dinghies on the rugged coastline and must hike inland accompanied by a mandatory park guide.
Best season
The cooler, drier garúa season from June to November is usually preferred for the strenuous hike, offering relief from the intense equatorial heat. However, the highlands often remain misty and draped in low clouds regardless of the specific time of year.
Terrain & paths
The hike involves a long, steady ascent across broken lava fields and dense highland vegetation to reach the massive caldera rim. The trails are uneven, rocky, and can be quite muddy near the summit where moisture accumulates heavily from the clouds.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with excellent ankle support are crucial for safely navigating the jagged and unpredictable volcanic rock. Breathable sun protection for the exposed lower slopes and a warm fleece for the chilly, wind-swept caldera rim are essential.

There are absolutely no roads or vehicles on this part of the island; all transportation is purely maritime. Tour boats anchor offshore, and visitors disembark temporarily, leaving all major luggage securely aboard the main vessel for the duration.

The intense equatorial sun and the strenuous nature of the long uphill hike pose significant risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Strict adherence to park rules is mandatory to protect the fragile ecosystem and the vulnerable giant tortoises.
Time needed
A visit involves a demanding full-day trek, usually starting before dawn to avoid the worst of the extreme midday heat. The entire round-trip hike to the caldera rim and back to the coastal landing site typically takes between six and eight hours.
