Catedral Nueva de Cuenca (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, commonly known as the Catedral Nueva, is the most iconic religious landmark in Cuenca. Construction began in 1885 following the designs of German architect Johannes Baptist Stiehle and spanned nearly ninety years until its official completion in 1975. The building is distinguished by its three monumental light-blue domes covered in tiles imported from Czechoslovakia, which define the city's skyline. The architectural style blends Neo-Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, utilizing local marble from the Azuay region and limestone. Inside, the cathedral features a magnificent altar covered in gold leaf, reminiscent of the baldachin in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Due to structural calculation errors during construction, the two bell towers could never be finished to their originally planned height. Today, the cathedral serves as both a spiritual heart for the community and a symbol of Cuenca's deep-rooted faith and architectural mastery.
