Roskilde is one of Denmark's oldest cities and served as the nation's capital until approximately 1443. Located at the head of the Roskilde Fjord on the island of Zealand, the city is world-renowned for Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. This cathedral, primarily built in the 12th and 13th centuries, is the traditional burial site for nearly 40 Danish monarchs. Another cultural cornerstone is the Viking Ship Museum, which houses five original 11th-century vessels recovered from the fjord. Today, Roskilde is globally famous for the Roskilde Festival, established in 1971, which has grown into one of Europe's largest music events. The city effectively balances its deep medieval history with a lively modern academic community centered around Roskilde University. Historically, its location made it a crucial hub for maritime trade and ecclesiastical administration.
