Pool Malebo (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Pool Malebo is a lake-like widening of the lower Congo River that separates the twin capitals of Kinshasa (DRC) and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo). Measuring approximately 35 kilometers in length and up to 23 kilometers in width, it forms a vast inland basin filled with numerous low-lying islands and shifting sandbars. Historically, it was known as Stanley Pool, named after the explorer Henry Morton Stanley who established a key station here in the late 19th century. Geographically, it marks the terminus of the navigable upper and middle stretches of the Congo River before the water plunges into the torrential Livingstone Falls rapids. Pool Malebo serves as a critical logistics hub where cargo is transferred from river vessels to rail lines for transport to the Atlantic coast. Ecologically, despite its proximity to massive urban populations, the area provides essential habitat for various waterfowl and fish, though it faces severe environmental threats from pollution and siltation. Mbamou Island, located in the center of the pool, is a significant site for local fishing and historical political boundary discussions.
