Vivi (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

Vivi was established on September 26, 1879, by Henry Morton Stanley as the first station for the International Association of the Congo. The outpost was situated on a plateau on the north bank of the Congo River, opposite Matadi, and served as a crucial strategic base for inland expansion. Stanley chose this location due to its elevated position, which provided natural defense and a clear view of the surrounding waterways. For a brief period, Vivi functioned as the first provisional capital of the emerging Congo Free State before the administration was relocated to Boma. The construction of the station involved immense logistical hurdles, as building materials and equipment had to be laboriously hauled up the steep hillsides. Today, very little remains of the original outpost, yet the site remains historically significant as the launching point of the Belgian colonial presence in the Congo Basin. These ruins mark the beginning of the large-scale exploration of the Congo interior by European explorers during the late 19th century.
