St. Vitus Cathedral (Czech Republic)

Weather…

St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague is the largest and most important church in the Czech Republic, located within the Prague Castle complex. Formally known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert, it serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and was the coronation site of Bohemian kings. Construction of the Gothic masterpiece began in 1344 under the patronage of Charles IV, replacing an earlier Romanesque rotunda. The project was led by master builders Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler, whose workshop defined the High Gothic style in Central Europe. Due to interruptions caused by wars and fires, the cathedral was only fully completed in 1929. It houses the striking St. Wenceslaus Chapel, decorated with semi-precious stones, and the royal crypt containing the remains of Bohemian monarchs. The cathedral also holds the Bohemian Crown Jewels, making it a central monument of Czech national heritage and religious life.
