Stone Gate Zagreb (Croatia)

Weather…

The Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata) is the sole remaining medieval gate of the Gradec settlement, which today constitutes the historic Upper Town of Zagreb. First documented in 1266, it originally served as a vital part of the city's fortification system designed to repel invaders. Its current Baroque appearance and spiritual significance are largely derived from the aftermath of a catastrophic fire on May 31, 1731, which razed most of the surrounding area. According to local history, a painting of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child was found completely unscathed among the ashes, leading citizens to believe it was a divine miracle. A small chapel was subsequently built within the gate's archway to house the icon, transforming the passage into a revered place of worship. Today, the walls are lined with countless stone tablets inscribed with 'Hvala' (Thank you), left by people whose prayers were reportedly answered. The intricate iron gate guarding the altar dates back to 1758 and is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. As a functioning thoroughfare, it connects Radićeva Street with St. Mark’s Square, blending daily urban life with profound religious tradition.
