St. Vitus Cathedral Rijeka
The Cathedral of St. Vitus in Rijeka is a unique Baroque rotunda and one of the most significant architectural landmarks of the city. Built starting in 1638 by the Jesuit order on the foundations of an older medieval church, its design was inspired by the famous Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. The construction spanned over a century, finally reaching completion in 1744. The building is distinguished by its monumental dome and the lavish use of marble within its interior, which features magnificent altars and sculptures. A notable historical feature is a cannonball embedded in the facade, dating from the Napoleonic Wars in 1813, serving as a reminder of the British naval bombardment of the city. Dedicated to the patron saint of Rijeka, St. Vitus, the cathedral houses a miraculous 13th-century crucifix that draws numerous pilgrims. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Rijeka, it plays a central role in the religious and cultural life of the region.
