The Mrežnica is one of the most unique and beautiful rivers in the Croatian interior, renowned for its numerous waterfalls and tufa barriers. Along its total length of approximately 63 kilometers, the river forms 93 waterfalls, which divide the flow into a chain of emerald-green pools and lakes. These waterfalls are created by the deposition of calcium carbonate, forming travertine barriers similar to those found in the world-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park. The river winds through a diverse landscape, ranging from deep canyons to lush wooded valleys, with particularly dramatic scenery in its upper course near Generalski Stol. Mrežnica's water is exceptionally clean and reaches pleasant temperatures in summer, making it a premier destination for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. Along its banks, many historic stone watermills can still be seen, some of which have been preserved and converted into traditional restaurants or guesthouses. The river eventually joins the Korana River in Karlovac, serving as a key component of the regional ecological network.
