The Mimara Museum in Zagreb houses one of the most comprehensive private art collections in Southeast Europe, donated to the city by the collector Ante Topić Mimara. The museum is located in a magnificent neo-Renaissance building on Roosevelt Square, which was originally constructed in 1895 as a secondary school. Since its opening in 1987, the museum has displayed over 3,700 items spanning from antiquity to the 20th century. The diverse collection includes archaeological artifacts from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, as well as a gallery of European paintings featuring works attributed to masters like Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velázquez. In addition to fine arts, the museum showcases decorative pieces, such as period furniture, delicate glassware, and textiles from various cultures. The building's architecture, with its grand facade and spacious halls, enhances the cultural prestige of the Croatian capital. Although the authenticity of some pieces has been subject to historical debate, the Mimara remains a central institution for art history research and a major destination for cultural tourism in Zagreb.
