Case de Gaulle
The 'Case de Gaulle' in Brazzaville is one of Central Africa's most historically significant residences and a powerful symbol of French resistance during World War II. Built between 1940 and 1942 by architect Roger Erell, the building originally served as the residence for the Governor General of French Equatorial Africa. However, it achieved lasting fame as the base for General Charles de Gaulle during his stays in Brazzaville, which served as the official capital of Free France from 1940 to 1943. The architecture of the house is a stellar example of African-inspired modernism, utilizing local materials like sandstone and wood in functional yet elegant forms. From this location, de Gaulle made critical strategic decisions and delivered pivotal speeches that shaped the future of Free France and the subsequent decolonization of Africa. Today, the Case de Gaulle serves as the official residence of the French Ambassador to the Republic of the Congo and is typically closed to the general public. Nevertheless, it remains a vital monument to the shared history of both nations and the crucial role Congo played in the liberation of Europe. Its hilltop position overlooking the Congo River provides the estate with a truly majestic presence.
